ICA/BOSTON PRESENTS FRENCH CHOREOGRAPHER XAVIER LE ROY

SCIENCE, ART AND DANCE COMBINE IN TWO ASTONISHING PERFORMANCES BY LEROY

(BOSTON) The Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston (ICA) presents French choreographer Xavier Le Roy, performing two astonishing works from his distinctive repertoire, on Friday, April 2 and Saturday, April 3 at 7:30 p.m. General admission tickets for each show are $20, $16 for members, students and seniors, and can be purchased at www.icaboston.org or by calling (617) 478-3103.

French choreographer Le Roy defies categorization as a dancer, as he draws on diverse influences from the worlds of science, performance art, and contemporary dance. Born in 1963, he studied biochemistry at the University of Montpellier, and started to dance in 1988. Each of the performances at the ICA will be followed by post-performance discussions to learn more about the artist’s research and a new piece, Anthropomorphic, that he’s developing with MIT scientists and researchers. This program is presented in partnership with MIT Program in Art, Culture and Technology.

Self-Unfinished
Friday, April 2, 7:30 p.m.

His 1998 work, Self-Unfinished presents Le Roy alone on stage as he morphs between human and machine, slowly contorting his body into a variety of surprising poses. The hour-long existential piece, performed in silence, is funny, clever and poignant, suggesting a world of multiple possibilities and revealing Le Roy’s ongoing interest in robotics. This performance contains nudity.

“Rigorously simple and wildly imaginative…an invigorating theatrical experience.” - New York Times

 Le Sacre du Printemps
Saturday, April 3, 7:30 p.m.
In this 2007 work, Le Roy is inspired by the idea of music-making as choreographed spectacle. Using a recording of Stravinsky’s score by the Berlin Philarmonic, he casts the audience in the role of orchestra and himself as conductor, performing his own gestural dance as a means of summoning the music.

Funded in part by FUSED: French U.S. Exchange in Dance, a program of the National Dance Project/New England Foundation for the Arts and the Cultural Services of the French Embassy in New York.
