Position Title: Front Desk Attendant
Department: Admissions and Box Office
Reports to: Admissions and Box Office Manager
Status: Part time, Hourly, Non-Exempt
Schedule: Thurs 5-9, Friday 9-1, Saturday 10-5, Sunday 10-5, additional hours as needed


The Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston seeks a friendly, reliable person with excellent cash handling and interpersonal skills to work at the museum’s admissions desk and box office.

The Front Desk Attendants provide the first impression of the ICA to visitors. They meet and greet the public, providing information about the museum and the surrounding areas, sell admission to the museum, and promote and sell memberships on site. In addition, Front Desk Attendants also sell tickets to all of our theater performances via the phone and on site during box office hours. Hours will include weeknights, Saturdays & Sundays, and Monday holidays when the museum is open.
 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Sells admission tickets to museum and theater visitors, receiving payment and processing the sales using the Patron Edge ticketing software system
  • Follow cash handling procedures to ensure accurate and timely processing of payments
  • Prepares deposits by summarizing all receipts on a daily basis and preparing forms such as cash and credit card reconciliation sheet in order to bank monies at shift's end
  • Promotes and sells memberships to visitors on site
  • Maintains ticket stock by tracking and maintaining appropriate level of inventory
  • Maintains automated systems by ensuring that the systems are working properly and notifies the Admissions and Box Office Manager and the IT department when they are not
  • Provides general information and responds to patrons’ requests for museum information concerning facilities, fees, membership information and other inquiries in order to assist patrons in their use and enjoyment of the ICA facilities
  • Answering and responding to telephone inquiries and forwarding calls to proper departments
  • Controls and directs crowds in lobby; acts as museum greeter as needed
  • Collects email addresses from visitors to complete visitor experience surveys
  • Works extra hours to cover box office shifts, handing out will call tickets and selling tickets for theater performances when necessary
  • Stays in contact with gallery staff by radio, communicating important information
  • Operates the museum’s coat check
  • Promotes and provides audio commentaries to visitors


QUALIFICATIONS

  • Available to work evenings, weekends, and holidays when the museum is open
  • Verifiable experience as an admissions desk attendant or cashier or comparable position that requires assisting customers and handling cash on a daily basis
  • Friendly, strong interpersonal skills; an enthusiastic attitude and the ability to represent the ICA in a professional and positive manner
  • Ability to work in a fast paced, time sensitive environment and respond calmly under pressure
  • Must have strong customer service and communication skills
  • Ability to demonstrate a neat and courteous appearance to museum visitors
  • A self-starting attitude with the initiative to keep oneself informed of all policies, promotions, and events at the museum
  • Ability to work well with staff and visitors and enthusiastically communicate museum procedures and information to the general public
  • Ability to use good judgment and respond effectively in handling crowds and waiting line
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure and troubleshoot when dealing with difficult situations
  • Flexible team player; honest, punctual, and reliable
