Overview:
The primary focus of the Department of Security is to protect the Museum’s art and facilities and create a safe and secure environment for all ICA visitors. The role of the Security Officer will be to support the Security Supervisor in implementing security measures across departments, with a primary focus on supporting and securing the visitor experience while inside the ICA.
The Security Officer will be responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment at the ICA by implementing security policies and procedures related to the protection of art, museum facilities, safety and protection of staff and visitors. The Security Officer will work under the direction of the Security Supervisor and in direct relation to the Visitor Experience Gallery Supervisor to enforce museum policies and procedures at all times. Please note that this work will require standing for long periods of time, strict adherence to dress code, and working some evening, weekend and holiday hours.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Helps to enforce museum policies, gallery rules and regulations.
- Assists Gallery Supervisor and Visitor Assistants during situations requiring a security presence.
- Works with the Gallery Supervisor to actively contribute to the positive rapport between Visitor Assistants, Gallery Interpreters, and visitors.
- Observes and assists visitors; corrects or reports problems to Security Supervisor, as appropriate.
- Roams galleries throughout shift to ensure the safety of the museum objects and spaces; communicates clearly and consistently with visitors and staff to ensure a positive visitor experience.
- Observes and inspects artwork for changes of any kind. Ensures that all art exhibits are working properly. Communicates with security supervisor regarding the condition and the maintenance of gallery exhibits.
- Monitors visitors to ensure that all guests who enter the museum have purchased admission ticket or are identified as staff or special guest; monitors large numbers in museum areas in accordance to the galleries capacity to provide a smooth visitation flow.
- Assists in the safe and secure evacuation of all gallery staff and patrons during an emergency.
- Works in conjunction with an external security vendor during special and unexpected events.
- Assists Security Supervisor with external facilities contractors, and deliveries entering and exiting through the loading dock.
- Assists in medical response and crowd control before, during & after any medical emergency.
- Other responsibilities as necessary.
The Security Officer works a varied schedule during the weekdays, Thursday and Friday evenings, weekends and some holiday hours. Specific hours for this position to be determined.
Qualifications:
- Minimum 3 years experience in the security/safety field
- Effective public speaking and interpersonal skills
- General understanding of art security and handling
- Ability to remain calm and present a professional demeanor; exceptional customer service skills
- Attention to detail with ability to perform a variety of tasks
- Responsible and reliable
- Ability to exercise excellent judgment by carrying out established policies and procedures for security and safety of people, artwork and facilities in a complete, consistent and timely manner
- Experience working in a fast paced museum environment a plus
- Ability to adhere to ICA policies and support management decisions in a positive, professional manner
- Ability to work evenings, weekends and some holidays
- Ability to lift at least 50 pounds and remain standing and alert for long periods
- CPR/AED Certification required; First Responder Certification preferred
The hourly wage for this position is commensurate with experience.
