Position Title: School Programs Intern
Department: Education
Supervisor: Monica Garza, Director of Education
Work Schedule: 9 am - 1 pm, 2-3 days a week, preferably Wednesday, Thursday & Friday
POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Education Department is actively creating and sustaining school partnerships, particularly with schools in Roxbury, Dorchester and South Boston. The School Program intern is responsible for assisting the department with its outreach efforts and programs for both students and teachers. The School Programs internships offers one qualified student the opportunity for program design, teaching in the museum’s Bank of America Art Lab and Paul and Phyllis Fireman Family Digital Studio, and audience development. Under the direction of the Director of Education, the School Programs intern will also help the education staff maintain the ICA’s existing partnership with two local elementary schools. In doing so, the intern will help lay the foundation for multi-year, long-term relationships with area schools and create a replicable program model for the ICA.
The Education Department offers unpaid internships to college students who enjoy working with students of all ages and participating as a member of a dynamic, creative team. Education interns develop an understanding of the role of museum education plays in the behind-the-scenes program design which connects visitors and art works in meaningful and memorable ways. Internships usually take place during the academic fall, spring, or summer semester. The Education Department encourages interns to seek academic credit for their internship and will assist the intern with fulfilling the requirements for credit.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide orientations to visiting self-guided school-age groups
- Co-teach in the Art Lab or Digital Studio and assist in set-up, when necessary
- Research and evaluate age-appropriate lesson plans and curriculum materials related to current exhibits
- Send follow-up correspondence and surveys to teachers; help maintain all data
- Assess how Massachusetts learning standards connect with the ICA’s educational programs and exhibits
- Support the Museum Education Assistant with correspondence from teachers via email and phone about group visit offerings
- Learn about and become familiar with current exhibits
- Assist with outreach and marketing museum education programs to schools and teachers
- Help maintain demographics and information from tour participants (ages, subject, school, location, first visit/repeat visit, etc.)
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Training:
- Background in education, media and/or fine arts preferred
- Undergrad senior, recent graduate, or graduate student
- Work Experience:
- Experience working with students required
- Some teaching experience preferred
- Skills and Abilities:
- Strong organizational skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Exceptional interpersonal skills, including the ability to work as part of a team
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office is required
- Familiarity with graphics and presentation software is helpful
- Must be able to work 8-10 hours each week
