ICA/AIGA Design Series: Design as Social Agent

Bringing together speakers from the fields of design, street art, music, and politics, this day-long event frames Shepard Fairey’s work within the context of grassroots civic action, punk rock, and 80s graffiti and skate culture. Featuring Steve Heller, Elliott Earls, Nicholas Blechman, Caleb Neelon, PIXNIT, and Kevin Grady.


 Bike Tour: Shepard Fairey Off Site

Join the ICA for a bike tour of Fairey’s public work in Boston and Cambridge. Stopping at 6 places along the way, exhibition curator Pedro Alonzo will talk about the context, content, and culture of the artist’s work and the relationships between graffiti, public art, graphic design, and advertising. The tour will cover approximately 10 miles, arriving back at the ICA in time to hit the Water Café for lunch. *NOTE: Participants will be required to sign a waiver; click here for details.

FAMILY PROGRAMS

Saturday, March 28, 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM
Come see the work of artist Shepard Fairey, then try your hand at combining graphics and text. Author and illustrator Jarrett Krosoczka will show and tell about his children’s books (inspired by Shepard Fairey's work) in the Bank of America Art Lab, and then help you transform your drawings. Don't miss Made in the Shade performing jazz (and some punk rock surprises!) in the Barbara Lee Family Foundation Theater at 12 and 2 pm.

Museum admission is free for 2 adults per family with children 12 and under. No prior registration is necessary.

Deck Design Graphics
Tuesdays, March 24 - May 19, 4 - 6 PM
Over 8 weeks at the ICA, learn how to create your own graphic designs that can be applied to the deck of a skateboard, or anywhere you choose. By the end of the program, participants will also be able to screen their designs on T-shirts. More details
