A Country Road. A Tree. Evening is a series Byrne began in 2005 based on the famous stage direction for Samuel Beckett’s seminal play, Waiting for Godot. Traveling to areas of rural Ireland and France that Beckett may have been familiar with when describing the simple scene, Byrne theatrically lights the site to create the effect of an empty stage awaiting its actors.

In this ongoing series, Gerard Byrne photographs magazine racks and newsstands, essentially creating a photograph of hundreds of photographs that mark what is “current.” He titles the image to mark the date it was taken (January 8, 2008) and the time passed until its installation at a new site (over one year and six months, in this case).
