1st Annual
ICA Limited Edition Portfolio

Exclusively for Members of the
Director's Circle

The ICA is thrilled to present the first annual ICA Limited Edition Portfolio.  This year’s portfolio celebrates the ICA's first anniversary and contains two wonderful works of art: a print of Chiho Aohsima’s The Divine Gas, 2006, and Edward Burtynsky’s photograph, East elevation construction (8A), Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston, 2006

The portfolio is sold in an edition of 22 for $10,000 and is offered to members of the Director Circle as a memento of our historic opening year. This is a unique opportunity to add works of art to your collection while also supporting the work of the ICA.

The portfolios will be available for a limited time. To purchase, please contact Ginny Casey at vcasey@icaboston.org.

Thank you for your continuing support of the ICA.

Chiho Aoshima
The Divine Gas, 2006
Color lithograph
Approx. 22 x 33 inches

In 2006, Chiho Aoshima designed a stunning new mural for the inaugural Sandra and Gerald Fineberg Art Wall.  The image she created, entitled The Divine Gas, depicts a giant girl lying in a lush landscape. The setting seems idyllic and serene—butterflies flutter, a deer nestles near her foot, a couple frolics hand-in-hand. Meanwhile, a billowing cloudscape, lorded over by a genie creature, emerges from her bottom. A few figures sit in the clouds, while others tumble toward the ground. Has the heroine given birth to a new (though somewhat ominous) world through her “divine gas?” Aoshima transforms passing gas, a mundane occurrence that is usually no more than the source of schoolyard snickers, into a delightfully irreverent, present-day myth.

Biography
Chiho Aoshima was born in Tokyo, Japan, in 1974, where she currently lives and works.  She received a degree in economics from Hosei University in Tokyo.  Aoshima has been included in numerous group exhibitions including Ecstasy: In and About Altered States at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (2005); the 54th Carnegie International, Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh (2004-05); the Liverpool Biennial (2002); and Superflat, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (2001).  In 2006, she had a solo exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art Lyon, France, as well as an installation in the London Underground’s Gloucester Road Station.

Edward Burtynsky
East elevation construction (8A), Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston, 2006
C-print
22 x 28 inches

In 2006, the ICA commissioned Edward Burtynsky to photograph the new ICA under construction.  Burtynsky is best known for photographs of quarries, shipping ports, oil fields, and other industrial sites.  Our spectacular site and building, perched on Boston’s harbor, seemed to be a perfect fit with the photographer’s fascination with “the intricate link between industry and nature.” This is one of the striking images that Burtynsky took in the couple of days he spent at the site. It shows the building’s dramatic cantivelver jutting into the clear blue sky, framing the city’s skyline in the distance.  A black pick-up truck underneath, as well as an abundance of scaffolding, is evidence of the construction teams hard at work. In the bottom left corner we spot the photographer’s shadow—Burtynsky has captured himself as he captures the scene. A large-scale version of this work, made possible through the generosity of Beth and Anthony Terrana, hangs in the ICA’s Water Café.

Biography
Edward Burtynsky was born in 1955 in St. Catharines, Ontario, and lives and works in Toronto.  He is a graduate of Ryerson University (Bachelor of Applied Arts in Photography) and Niagara College (Graphic Art). Edward Burtynsky is known as one of Canada's most respected photographers. His depictions of global industrial landscapes are included in the collections of museums around the world, including the National Gallery of Canada, the Bibliotèque Nationale in Paris, the Museum of Modern Art and the Guggenheim Museum in New York.  Exhibitions include Manufactured Landscapes at the National Gallery of Canada (2003) and Before the Flood (2003), which were showcased in San Francisco, Toronto, Montreal and London in 2004, and the Brooklyn Museum of Art in 2005.  Burtynsky’s distinctions include the TED Prize, The Outreach award at the Rencontres d’Arles, The Flying Elephant Fellowship, Applied Arts Magazine book award(s), and the Roloff Beny Book award. In 2006 he was awarded the title of Officer of the Order of Canada and given an honorary degree; Doctor of Laws, from Queen’s University, Kingston, Ontario, Canada.
