Fourteen-year-old Arrietty is one of the "little people," living secretly with her parents under the floors of a country house. Her family survives by "borrowing" food and finding ingenious uses for the household objects dropped by its inhabitants—a single cube of sugar can last for weeks; a pin makes a great sword for fighting off hungry insects!

When Shawn, a delicate, handsome teenager moves into the room upstairs to build his strength before a heart operation, he catches a glimpse of Arreitty he is entranced. The two begin to form a bond, but with their secret now exposed, the borrowers worry that their time in the country house may be coming to an end.
