INTO THE HEART OF MUSIC
Beyond Ipanema
by Guto Barra and Béco Dranoff
(2009, Brazil/US, 89 min, in Portuguese with English subtitles)
Introduction by co-directors Guto Barra and Béco Dranoff
New England Premiere
For decades Brazilian music has captivated audiences worldwide. Bossa nova still lures DJs and producers 50 years after it was created, while the Tropicália movement resonates deeply with the alternative-rock crowd. What makes Brazilian music such a powerful force? Through interviews with David Byrne, M.I.A., Os Mutantes, Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Tom Zé, Seu Jorge, and many others, Beyond Ipanema surveys the Brazilian music experience outside of Brazil, exploring its unique position in global culture.
Co-presented with the Consulate General of Brazil in Boston, as part of the Brazilian Independence Day celebration. For more information, visit www.consulatebrazil.org. Special thanks to Cinema Tropical.
