SHORT FILM PROGRAM: NEW ENGLAND ANIMATORS

WEST and TWO by Steven Subotnick

WEST by Steven Subotnick (2:00, 2011). The first in a series of essays on the destruction of the American Wilderness.

TWO by Steven Subotnick (2:30, 2011). Built from a single sequence of gestural ink drawings, Two was created by shaping, layering, and changing film speed. The original sequence was transformed into a visual dialog based on timing, gesture, mark-making, and sound.

Steven Subotnick's animated films are associative explorations of themes found in history, folklore, and his own unconscious. His techniques are varied, but the poetic quality of the visual image is always his primary concern.
