Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company
Director and choreographer Bill T. Jones returns to the ICA at the center of a new work. Inspired by John Cage’s Indeterminacy, in which the legendary artist and composer recounted 90 one-minutes stories from his life, Story/Time brings together 70 randomly selected one-minute vignettes with dance segments drawn from his four-decade body of work. While the stories, read aloud by Jones, are drawn from his own life and tales handed down through the generations of his family, the arrangements are determined anew for each performance. In layering a traditional form (the stories) against the avant-garde compositional concerns found in the dance and music, Jones explores chance, indeterminacy, and the tension between high and low art.
Story/Time includes a live acoustic and electronic score by Ted Coffey based upon chance procedure and interactive technologies. Longtime company collaborators Robert Wierzel (lighting design), Bjorn Amelan (décor), and Liz Prince (costume design) create the stage environment.
Free pre-show talk by ICA Director of Programs David Henry 30 minutes before the February 21 performance.
