Ann Arbor-based Nomo is a post-afrobeat dance explosion with a unique and vital sound. What started out as a University of Michigan party band has turned in to a crowd-pleasing, always-touring juggernaut. Inspired by Fela Kuti, their work also incorporates seemingly disparate influences such as as Funkadelic, MIA, Brian Eno and Kraut-rockers like Can and Neu, to create a modern, non-revivalist take on afrobeat.
Dutty Artz is a New York-based label/collective run by Matt Shadetek and DJ/Rupture. Shadetek has been a force since 2000, focusing on dancehall reggae, grime and dubstep. He’s responsible for the underground smash hit, “Brooklyn Anthem,” featured on EA Sports’ Madden NFL 08. DJ/rupture creates complicated mixes of partyrock with political undertones using three turntables. He has done two John Peel Sessions and performed as turntable soloist with the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra.
Wavelengths is an adventurous series of the most exciting indie, electronic, and global acts emerging today. Co-produced by the ICA and World Music/CRASHarts.
Please note: Food and drink are available for purchase at the ICA; no outside food or drink is permitted. No smoking is allowed inside of the concert area. No audio or video recording is permitted. In case of inclement weather, the concert will be moved indoors to the theater. Should this happen, an announcement will be posted on both the ICA and World Music/CRASHarts websites at noon on the day of the concert.
