Elizabeth Essner on Artist Kathy Butterly
Kathy Butterly’s exquisite ceramics on view in Figuring Color: Kathy Butterly, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Roy McMakin, Sue Williams collapse, fold, twist, and drip into playful vessels reminiscent of body parts and domestic objects. Modern and contemporary ceramics specialist Elizabeth Essner in a conversation about Butterly's artistic process and mastery of clay.
Elizabeth Essner is an appraiser and advisor of 20th Century design in New York auction houses and modern design galleries. Essner received her graduate degree in Design History from the Bard Graduate Center for Decorative Arts and Design.
