The Art of Lettering: Letterpress
Because I was around it so much, I started to use a lot of the stuff from the print shop in my work. I was fascinated by the trays used to hold the old lead type….When you pulled those trays out, the fingerprints from the printer would be really apparent on the plates from over 40 years of printing. It looked amazing to me.—Barry McGee, artltdmag.com
Discover the art of lettering with inspiration from works on view in Barry McGee. The artist's use of letterpress trays while working in a Bay Area–print shop has inspired the ICA to collaborate with Repeat Press—a full-scale, contemporary letterpress studio in Somerville's Union Square—for an exclusive behind-the-scenes look into their facility. Studio founder Mike Dacey leads the workshop with introductions to tools and equiptment, in-depth demonstrations, and plenty of hands-on activities.
Space is limited. For ages 12 and up. Participants will meet in Somerville, MA. Directions to the facility will be sent to all registered participants in advance of the program.
A limited number of full scholarships are available for BPS teachers with advance registration. For more information, contact Leah Kandel at firstname.lastname@example.org or 617-478-3136.
