Join fellow supporters and Ruth Erickson, Mannion Family Curator, for a private virtual studio visit with David Antonio Cruz, Boston-based multidisciplinary artist and Professor of the Practice in Painting and Drawing at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University.

David Antonio Cruz explores the visibility and intersections of Black, brown, and queer subjects through painting, sculpture, and performance. Focused on queer, trans, and gender-fluid communities of color, Cruz has formed his artistic practice from an ethical and political commitment to capture the dignity and beauty of these communities as well as the violence perpetrated against them. His baroque staging and dramatic compositions rendered in lush colors evoke the cycles of exaltation and suffering that his subjects undergo in real life. In this studio visit, Cruz shares with us a brand new series of paintings and reflects on how he has creatively adapted his studio practice in the time of Covid-19.

The ICA recently acquired Cruz’s thosebutterflyboys, 2017, a painting from the series returnofthedirtyboys/girls, begun during the artist’s residency at Project for Empty Space in New York.

Please contact dcevents@icaboston.org to RSVP for details and access to the virtual event.
