Members of the James Sachs Plaut Society have shown their commitment to the long-term success of the museum’s mission, programs, and collection in one of three special ways:

Legacy giving

Legacy gifts, such as a bequest or charitable gift annuity, are an opportunity to consider charitable giving over time and provide a reliable source of funding for the ICA, so your impact is felt for generations to come.

A bequest made under one’s will is often the simplest way to make meaningful gift to the ICA. You may write a new will or simply add a codicil to your existing will. Bequests come in any form—cash, securities, and other personal property, including workings of art—and your charitable bequest is 100% tax deductible for estate tax purposes.

If you are interested in learning more about planned giving or if you have already included the ICA in your estate plans, please contact the Development Office at 617-478-3198 or jspsociety@icaboston.org. The ICA recommends that you discuss your gift plans with your legal and financial advisors. Members of the ICA Staff are happy to work with you and your advisors to ensure that your gift achieves your goals and meets the ICA’s needs.

Gifts of Art

A gift of art is one of the most powerful ways to build the ICA Collection and is an important resource for contemporary culture in Boston. Established in 2006, the ICA Collection represents diverse artistic backgrounds and perspectives and showcases some of the most influential and exciting artists working today.

Gifts of art often come from dedicated collectors who want to ensure that the art of our time is available to a wide audience. By donating an artwork during your lifetime or by bequest, you are creating a lasting legacy.  Donors are generally entitled to claim an income-tax charitable deduction for the full fair market value of the property (up to 30% of AGI with a five-year carryover).

For more information about making a gift of art, please contact the Development Office at 617-478-3198 or jspsociety@icaboston.org.

Sustaining Annual Support

The ICA relies on the annual support of dedicated long-term members as a reliable source of funding. The incredible impact of this commitment is evidenced by the exhibitions on view, performances staged, and in the ICA’s robust educational programs for youth, families, and adults.

Supporters who have maintained an ICA membership for 25 years or more at any membership level, are welcomed into the James Sachs Plaut Society on an annual basis. With any questions, please the Development Office at 617-478-3183 or jspsociety@icaboston.org.

In gratitude for their thoughtful planning and generosity, James Sachs Plaut Society members are recognized in the following ways:

  • Recognition in annual James Sachs Plaut Society listings
  • Invitation to the annual Legacy Luncheon
  • Invitations to private exhibition opening receptions

There are no additional costs or dues associated with membership in the James Sachs Plaut Society.

About James Sachs Plaut

James Sachs Plaut

Credited with “defining modern art for America” (The Boston Globe) James Sachs Plaut (1913–1996) was the first director of what is now the Institute of Contemporary Art. Leading the ICA for 18 years, he brought many firsts to Boston, exhibiting work by Frank Lloyd Wright, Oscar Kokoschka, and Edvard Munch, among others, never before seen in the city.

Originally founded as the Boston Museum of Modern Art to reflect its ties to New York’s MoMA, the ICA eventually changed its name to describe more accurately Plaut’s primary mission—to create a laboratory for presenting contemporary art—which remains central to the museum’s work today.

To honor his memory and continue his important work, the ICA launched the James Sachs Plaut Society. Your contribution will sustain Plaut’s vision of a place where innovation, excellence, and creativity not only thrive but nourish the cultural community in Boston and beyond.

The Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston recommends that you discuss your gift plans with your own legal and financial advisors. Members of the ICA staff will be happy to work with you and your advisers on ensure that your gift meets your goals and the ICA’s needs.
