ICA/Boston Adult and Teen Programs Internship, Summer 2026: The Institute of Contemporary Art seeks an enthusiastic Adult and Teen Programs Intern to join the Education team for Summer 2026. The program commitment is 28 hours per week for approximately 10 weeks, often averages 4 days per week and includes occasional evenings and weekends.

Overview: The ICA invites qualifying undergraduate students to apply for our ten-week, paid summer internship. The Adult and Teen Programs Intern will work closely with ICA Education staff on the implementation and evaluation of programs and resources for a range of learners, with a specific focus on adult and teen audiences. This internship offers a student the opportunity to deepen their understanding of contemporary art and the day-to-day operations of a mid-sized art museum’s education department.

Throughout the summer, the Adult and Teen Programs Intern will assist with adult programs, including talks and art-making experiences, as well as with teen programs and events. The Adult and Teen Programs Intern will also complete research assignments relating to upcoming exhibitions, adult programming, teen programming, and museum interpretation.

The Adult and Teen Programs Internship requires onsite presence at the ICA’s Seaport offices. The schedule is 9:30 AM – 5:00 PM Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. To support programs taking place outside of these hours, occasional evening and weekend hours will be required.

WORKING AT THE ICA:

  1. All ICA employees are required to reside in Massachusetts and within a reasonable commuting distance from our Seaport location as of their first day of work.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist with the coordination and implementation of adult programs, including art-making experiences and talks.
  • Research Boston area artists and arts organizations to identify possible collaborators on future adult programs.
  • Populate the Education department wiki, an internal training resource, with relevant content on upcoming exhibitions.
  • Support the development of an interactive installation in the ICA’s Poss Family Mediatheque including research, and activity testing.
  • Assist with planning and facilitation of teen programs, particularly with Teen Exhibitions Program, a group of young people who amplify teen art and artists by planning exhibitions and events.
  • Research and connect with teen programs at other museums and arts spaces that work with teens to curate and activate gallery spaces and create an opportunity for Teen Exhibitions Program to connect virtually with teens at one or more of these organizations.
  • Provide support for other education department programs and initiatives, as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student (rising junior or senior), studying studio art, arts education, art history, and/or related course of study; knowledge of contemporary art, a plus.
  • Experience completing research assignments and organizing and distilling research findings.
  • Knowledge of studio art media, materials, and processes.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills (oral and written) and ability to speak comfortably in public.
  • Interest in teaching or facilitation of studio-based lessons/workshops in visual arts to a range of audiences; background working with adult or teen audiences, a plus.
  • Ability to work collaboratively or independently on projects.
  • Possess a desire to work with diverse learners.
  • Ability to see, listen and talk for extended periods in person, and understand printed material.
  • Ability to remain calm when working with a range of audiences.
  • Must be able to exchange accurate information with visitors, staff, departments, and with diverse and multigenerational audiences.
  • Available to work flexible hours including evening and weekend shifts.
  • Must pass a CORI screening.

Physical Requirements:

  • Possess mobility to move about throughout the museum, offices and other locations.
  • Prolonged periods of standing and/or moving about during programs and events.
  • Ability to lift up to 15 pounds, pushing and pulling, keyboarding and gripping.
  • Travel to Watershed via water taxi requires traveling down a dock ramp and transferring to the boat (boarding boat requires stepping over/on and three steps down).

Pay Range: $19.00 – $19.00 per hour (this is a fixed rate position)

The wage range for this role accounts for a variety of factors used to make compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets, experience and professional training, and the organization’s internal compensation structure. It is typical for a new hire to enter their role at the lower end of the stated range. At the ICA, compensation decisions are dependent on facts and circumstances of each case.
