We are looking for a dynamic team player to join a small but impactful department, who is adept at contributing to the strategic vision and providing hands-on participation and impact.

Overview: The Associate Director of Marketing is a collaborative leader responsible for developing and executing mission-aligned marketing and audience engagement campaigns that increase museum attendance, deepen community connections, and expand the ICA’s reach. Reporting to the Chief Communications and Marketing Officer (CCMO), this role leads advertising, digital marketing, the ICA’s website and eNews, and integrated marketing initiatives that support exhibitions, public programs, membership, retail operations, ticket sales, earned revenue, and other institutional priorities. The Associate Director of Marketing oversees marketing analytics, budgets, and external agency and vendor relationships to optimize campaign performance, inform decision-making, and deliver measurable results.  The Associate Director of Marketing will have direct oversight and supervision of the Marketing Coordinator.

 WORKING AT THE ICA:  

  1. All ICA employees are required to reside in Massachusetts and within commuting distance from our Seaport location as of the first day of work.  
  2. The ICA offers the flexibility of a hybrid work week, which averages three days a week onsite for employees who are eligible to work remotely (subject to change, and at managers discretion). 

Responsibilities:

  • Create and execute integrated, results-oriented marketing campaigns that further the museum’s goals of increasing engagement, attendance, revenue, membership, ICA Store and ticket sales. 
  • In collaboration with the Communications and Marketing department, shape and steward institutional messaging across channels to ensure strategic alignment, coordinated timing, and consistent messaging.
  • Develop advertising campaigns from concept through execution, including media planning, creative development, and budget oversight across print, OOH, digital, onsite, and broadcast channels.
  • Partner with the Chief Communications and Marketing Officer (CCMO) to develop, manage, and monitor marketing and advertising budgets, ensuring strategic resource allocation, fiscal responsibility, and optimized campaign performance. 
  • Partner with the CCMO and cross-functional stakeholders to evaluate website performance and functionality, assess and prioritize external agency recommendations, and guide strategic investments and user experience enhancements that support institutional goals. 
  • Oversee and strategically leverage data from Google Analytics, Tessitura, Wordfly, and other digital analytics platforms to measure performance, translate metrics into actionable insights, and inform strategies that optimize marketing campaigns, user journeys, ticket sales funnels, membership acquisition, digital engagement, and audience growth. 
  • Establish and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) and benchmarks for marketing and digital initiatives, regularly communicating results, trends, and strategic recommendations to senior leadership.
  • Serve as the institutional lead for ICA eNews, overseeing editorial quality, brand and style compliance, audience segmentation, list management, and email marketing best practices to deliver accurate, consistent, and high-impact communications that strengthen audience engagement and support institutional goals. 
  • Lead audience research initiatives including ongoing visitor surveys, focus groups, and partnerships with external research consultants; synthesize and present findings to inform strategic decisions.
  • Collaborate with Curatorial, Performance, Education, Development, Membership, Retail, and the Director’s Office to align marketing strategies with institutional priorities.
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive marketing and communications plan for the ICA Store in partnership with Retail leadership.
  • Support Special Events initiatives, including First Fridays, through strategic planning, messaging, and on-site engagement.
  • Drive growth of local audiences, spearheading outreach initiatives and nurturing relationships with neighborhood, city, and community partners, with particular focus in the Seaport and East Boston.
  • Build and maintain ICA relationships with key tourism, neighborhood, and cultural partners to increase visitation and institutional visibility.
  • Supervise and mentor the Marketing Coordinator, providing professional development, clear performance expectations, and ongoing feedback.
  • Performs other duties reasonably related to the functions described above.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree in marketing, communications, arts administration, or related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive marketing experience, preferably within an arts, cultural, nonprofit, or mission-driven organization.
  • Demonstrated success leading integrated marketing campaigns that achieve measurable growth in audience engagement and revenue.
  • Strong analytical, technical, and data interpretation skills, with experience using website analytics, CRM databases, content management systems (CMS), email marketing platforms, Microsoft Office, and digital marketing tools; Tessitura experience is a plus. 
  • Exceptional writing, editing, and verbal communication skills with meticulous attention to detail.
  • Must be able to exchange accurate information with departments, and with diverse and multigenerational audiences.
  • Proven ability to manage budgets, agencies, and cross-functional initiatives.
  • Prior staff supervision and leadership experience required.
  • Availability to work occasional evenings and weekends.

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods of remaining stationary working on a computer, or standing during events, photo shoots, and media coverage.
  • Ability to move about in the office to access files, printers, etc., and in the gallery spaces to work with media outlets.
  • Ability to lift up to 15 pounds, pushing and pulling, keyboarding and gripping  
  • Travel to Watershed via water taxi requires traveling down a dock ramp and transferring to the boat (boarding boat requires stepping over/on and three steps down).

Salary Range: $100,000 – $110,000 annually

The wage range for this role accounts for a variety of factors used to make compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets, experience and professional training, and to the organization’s internal compensation structure. It is typical for a new hire to enter their role at the lower end of the stated range based on meeting the minimum qualifications of the position. At the ICA, compensation decisions are dependent on facts and circumstances of each case.
