Houston-based artist and educator Bennie Flores Ansell’s interest in migration, flight, and movement makes a bold appearance at the ICA starting this spring. The ongoing themes in Ansell’s art come from her own personal journey from the Philippines to the United States at a very young age. Her intricate installations look like maps, topographical views, and swarms of butterflies but upon closer inspection reveal surprising hidden imagery. For her Boston debut, Fish Out of Water, visitors will be encouraged to reflect on their own personal family journeys by using a mirror-symmetry drawing technique to create a collection of flying fish that will soar throughout the museum’s Bank of America Art Lab walls.

Fish Out of Water will be open select hours during April School Vacation Week and subsequent weekends.
